first 5 years of marriage

I don’t know about you, but I think being married can be hard work sometimes.  It takes commitment, compromise, and selflessness to stay married.  Marriage can be especially hard for young couples that are shocked at the changes their lives have taken.

Focus on the Family has a great resource for newly marriage couples.  The First 5 Years of Marriage helps couples get answers to questions by trusted counselors.

post Tackle it Tuesday: Saving with Coupons

January 29th, 2008

Filed under: savings, tackle it tuesday — Karen @ 11:40 am

I confess that I haven’t used The Grocery Game in about a month.  On the plus side, I really haven’t had to because we have such a stock pile of groceries that I got on sale.  Yesterday I spent hours going through coupons, pulling out ones that are about to expire, and checking my list for this week.

One thing that really bothers me is that I subscribe to the local paper and they don’t have all the coupons that The Grocery Game tells me I can use.  Of course, I didn’t find this out until after I had subscribed.

In case, you’re interested in saving 50% or more on your grocery bill, here are some of my pics on how I do this.

my coupons 1

Here’s my list that I print out each week.  The Grocery Game tells me which items are on sale, which week of the paper I can find the coupon, how much I will pay for the item with the sale and coupon applied, how much percentage I’m saving, and if it’s an item I should stock up on.

my coupons 2

This is my handy dandy expandable file system.  Since The Grocery Game tells you which week of the paper you’ll need the coupon from, I don’t clip the coupons until I need them.

my coupons 3

I file the coupons into their own slot each week and I write the date on the front of that week’s packet.

It’s only $1 to sign up for a trial membership at The Grocery Game.  Thereafter, it’s inexpensive.  If you get people to sign up under you, then you can get free weeks.  If you decide to join, please use my email address as your referral.  knowhimwell at hotmail dot com.  Thanks!

My other tackle for today was to list a giveaway at Thrifty Mommy.  You’ll have to check it out. I’m giving away coupons for free chicken.  Yum!

That’s Tuesdays tackle for me. I’m getting back on track with clipping coupons, stock piling, and saving money.  What are you up to today?

post Bubba Had Shingles

January 27th, 2008

Filed under: odds and ends — Karen @ 4:02 pm

Bubba walked into a doctor’s office and the receptionist asked him what he had.  Bubba said: “Shingles.”  So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat.

Fifteen minutes later a nurse’s aide came out and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, “Shingles.”  So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Bubba to wait in the examining room.

A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, “Shingles.”  So the nurse gave Bubba a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told Bubba to take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor.

An hour later the doctor came in and found Bubba sitting patiently in the nude and asked Bubba what he had.  Bubba said, “Shingles.”  The doctor asked, “Where?”

Bubba said, “Outside on the truck.  Where do you want me to unload ‘em??”

post Decadent Peanut Butter Pie

January 24th, 2008

Filed under: recipes — Karen @ 6:37 pm

It’s National Peanut Butter Day.  There’s a day for everything, isn’t there?  Anyhoo, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate then to offer you this yummy recipe from Smuckers.  I made this for a church dinner one time and it was the well accepted.  Hope you enjoy it.

peanut butter pie

1 prepared chocolate cookie pie crust
1 cup Jif creamy peanut butter
8 oz cream cheese (at room temperature)
1/2 cup sugar
12 oz container of non-dairy whipped topping, divided
1 jar (11.75 oz) Smucker’s Hot Fudge Ice Cream Toppings, divided

Drizzle: 2 tbs Smucker’s Hot Fudge and 2 tbs Jif Peanut Butter

In a medium bowl, beat together the Jif peanut butter, cream cheese and sugar.  Gently fold in 3 cups whipped topping.  Spoon mixture into the pie shell.  Using a spatula, smooth mixture to edges of pie.

Reserving 2 tablespoons of Smucker’s Hot Fudge, place remaining Smucker’s Hot Fudge into a microwave safe bowl or glass measuring cup.  Microwave for 1 minute.  Stir.  Spread Smucker’s Hot Fudge over pie to cover the peanut butter layer.  Refrigerate until serving time.

Just before serving, spread the remaining whipped topping over hot fudge layer, being careful not to mix the two layer.

Place the 2 tbs Smucker’s Hot Fudge in a small baggie and knead for a few seconds.  Cut a tiny hole in the corner of the bag and drizzle over pie.  Do the same with 2 tbs Jif Peanut Butter going in the opposite direction of the Smucker’s Hot Fudge.
